An Alternator keeps your battery charged. It provides power to run your electrical accessories on your car while it is running.
Symptoms of a Bad Alternator
You should also know the warning signs of impending device malfunctions in the car. Malfunctioning car parts or devices gives you indirect indications of it's problems. Some cars have devices that show there condition. There are numerous indicators that give you advance notice of a bad alternator.
Common Symptoms of a Bad Alternator:
Bad Alternator Symptoms #1: Watch the Dash Board/ Service Lights
The dashboard service indicator or service lights, indicate the condition of the alternator. If the indicator lights flicker or switch off, it possibly means two things. It could be that the service light LED is gone or the alternator is not working. You need to check both cases as soon as possible either with a mechanic or do it your self with a dc voltmeter.
Bad Alternator Symptoms #2: Battery Voltage
Know the condition of your alternator, with a multimeter or a dc voltmeter and check the voltage output of the battery. If it is consistently low (less than 13 V) and diminishing, chances are, that either the alternator is partially or fully failing or there is a problem with the car battery. Either way it's best to get checked by a mechanic.
Bad Alternator Symptoms #3: Dimming Accessories and Lights
One indirect symptoms of a bad alternator are diminished performance of electrical accessories in the car. Such as, Dimming headlights, interior lights, dash board lights or your car dying at night while you are driving. This indicates, low level charging of the battery, which could be a result of the alternator not working properly. In this case, an immediate check up from your mechanic is recommended.
Bad Alternator Symptoms #4: Noise
Most car mechanics can tell what is wrong with a car, just by listening to it. Noise is an indicator of something going wrong. In most cases, a clanging or rattling noise might indicate that something is wrong with the alternator belt or its other parts.
